In a moment of temporary derangement, Bobbie Pickford Norton begins an affair with a married Member of Parliament. Scandal inevitably follows. Bobbie escapes to a job as a housekeeper in a decaying castle in Galway. She becomes friends with the absent owner's sister, nurse to his invalid wife, wormwood to his jealous mistress and mentor to his three children.
